I often joke—truthfully—that I didn’t really notice my colour until I came to Canada.
And don’t get me wrong—I love Canada. The multiculturalism, the values, the kindness and courtesy of its people. It’s home now.
But yes—despite being mildly well-traveled, it was here that I first became aware of what it meant to be a Black woman in the room.
Back home in Nigeria, the barriers I navigated were largely gendered. In Canada, the dynamics shifted—race, gender, colour, accent, culture, and unspoken power structures all came into focus.
Across every boardroom, region, and sector I’ve worked in, one truth kept surfacing in different forms :
- Equity is often invited into the room, but rarely empowered to speak
- Equity is included for optics—not for impact.
- Equity shows up—but is too often silenced by legacy systems.
That became the starting point of my doctoral research:
Invisible Guests: Giving Equity a Seat at the Table of D&I (Paris School of Business, 2024)
Here’s some of what I uncovered: what many of us already know or observed
- Representation ≠ power. You can have a diverse team and still operate within biased systems.
- Equity stalls without executive accountability. Leaders often support the idea of equity, but hesitate to change their decision-making frameworks.
- Performative DEI is far too common — It looks good on paper, but doesn’t transform outcomes
- Many strategies look inclusive—but aren’t designed to be transformative
We can change that. But it starts with telling the truth…
The truth is: Equity has to be built in—not bolted on.

That means:
- Reworking performance management systems
- Coaching leadership on decision equity
- Embedding DEI into org design, not just programming
If your DEI strategy is stuck—or if people are quietly opting out—it’s not about effort. It’s about alignment. And courage.
Oh, to meet more bold and transformational leaders ready to lead differently. To move beyond words and really walk the talk.
What has your experience with equity looked like—either as a leader or a team member? I’d love to hear how you’ve seen it show up… or not.
